Sandy, an excellent friend and colleague

I was moved at the memorial today and I thought I should contribute something here. I was a trainee pathologist in Edinburgh from 1998 to 2004. Sandy was always kind, generous and the life and soul of any pub or curry outing. When I sat my MRCPath Part 2 exams in Manchester during Spring 2003, Sandy without hesitation, generously lent me his personal consultant grade microscope from his own office at the New RIE. He helped me wrap this really expensive piece of kit in some bath towels and pack it into a sports holdall! Suffice to say I took the microscope to the exam and passed with flying colours. The 'scope proved to be invaluable. Thanks Sandy. Another recollection I have regards his interest in computer aided learning. Sandy loved teaching as everyone knows. He appreciated the role of IT in this process. However, he really had little clue about computers themselves. I recall him running out of space on his hard drive, getting someone to fit a new one, then moving the windows folder and program files to the new drive and wondering why his computer has stopped working! It was very funny at the time but easily fixed. Lastly I remember how happy Sandy was, especially around Sally. I was saddened by her loss and regrettably the last time I spoke with Sandy was shortly after her death, when he called me in Dundee for a chat. We agreed to go for a pint in Edinburgh when he felt more up to it. It never happened. Sorry Sandy! RIP. Best wishes, Lee Jordan
